With my current pay, which is within the average range for Toronto, I wouldn’t even be able to afford Toronto or Vancouver.
If I moved to those bigger cities, there would be no room for savings, travel or miscellaneous expenses without sacrificing my comfort of living.
My comfort of living includes at least a 1-bedroom without roommates, my bi-annual Philippine flights, my masters program, and family support which includes mortgages. Everyone has their own criteria, and some may say “oh well, you don’t have to fly 2x a year” or “you don’t have to go to school”— no, these are 𝗺𝘆 preferences and they are nonnegotiable.
I will only move when I know I can, without sacrificing my way of life. Do not pretend to live outside your means.
If you’re considering moving to Canada, or even just leaving the nest and living on your own, I suggest avoid copying the crowd just for the sake of the so-called glamour that goes with it. Some force to stay in those cities, but can barely afford to travel outside the province or are in deep debt.
Choose and spend wisely, friends.
