One of my biggest fears for my career is working for people I don’t like. Healthy arguments here and there, sure, but to actually not like your colleagues? 40+ hours a week constantly being miserable and annoyed?
I fear getting an employer with strict, traditional rules. Where we can’t joke around and have fun. Where saying “Hey” is discouraged because it’s considered unprofessional. Where I feel unheard by my manager. Where I feel like just a number, expected to act like a machine.
I’ve had the privilege of working with great people so far, both here in Canada and when I was in the Philippines. I also have a family who built a safe enough environment, who I know I can turn to and who will encourage me to quit and prioritize myself, in case I ever find myself with that kind of employer.
But not everyone has that privilege, to just quit a job. Most of us are just trying to pay the bills.
So, if you also become a manager or a team lead, I hope you find the courage to fight traditions and help make the workplace fun, or human, or at the very least tolerable.
