Our product, Deimax, provides virus and bacteria detection through saliva analysis. With our advanced Deimax Kit that includes an organic mouthwash and a smart diagnostic gargle cup— seamlessly linked to the user-friendly Deimax app— getting your medical needs assessed and helped has never been faster. Empowering users to self-diagnose through concrete evidence, track health history, and stay informed, Deimax represents a shift in combating long wait times and doctor shortage issues.

It is an academic project for the Master of Digital Experience Innovation (MDEI) program at the University of Waterloo Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business, owned and designed by a group of graduate students. The challenge was to ideate through worldbuilding. We were tasked to look into a future, find a problem in said future, and design a product to solve that problem.

We wanted a solution that would help people get a diagnosis and buy medication without the need to wait for a doctor’s appointment, which required a physical device that can scan them of any ailments. We ultimately decided to go with what’s most feasible and convenient for people, which they should be able to afford and carry around: a gargle cup.

We imagined a future where smart cups can detect bacteria and viruses, with the mobile phone interpreting and managing the data. Smart cup design by Elijah Robert.

My responsibility was the design of the mobile app paired with the cup. I collaborated with the team and applied their research to the app while working with another designer, Amrit Kaur Klair, in completing all user flows and features.

Its core function was to warn and educate users of any infections detected by the smart cup and provide them a health guide on how to manage it. Other features included are the ability to remotely request a prescription from a licensed medical practitioner, track gargle history for medical purposes, find a nearby pharmacy, and more.

The name Deimax was inspired by the Disney character Baymax from Big Hero 6 (2014). Since Baymax was a healthcare companion, he was the perfect character to have drawn inspiration from. “Dei” is the acronym for our masters program, Digital Experience Innovation.

The branding also came from one of the movie’s posters, and if you’re struggling with a palette for a project, you can use this technique too:

Get a movie poster or an image that is related to your product, something you like and something eye-catching. Take 5-6 colours from that poster for your palette, making sure you have primary and accent colors along the way.
